Description

Based on a poem by Kim Chi-ha (1941–2022) – a South Korean poet, playwright and political activist, recognised as the leading ‘poet of resistance’ against the military dictatorship in South Korea during the 1970s and 1980s – Forward is not the only way is a work that establishes a continuous and vibrant dialogue with the music of key composers, whose aesthetics intertwine to form a unique language.

The music of J. S. Bach, Kurtág, Takemitsu, Hosokawa and Messiaen provides a counterpoint to the actor João Grosso and a cast of dancers and performers from various generations, in a narrative that explores the body, memory and choreographic allusion: a subtle reference to the past and narrative memory, to the body as an archive and a story.
